Homegrown

Planting Seeds for Eternity

The Czaja family loves eating fruit straight from their orchards because doing so reminds them of God’s love.  14 years ago while living in a sky-rise in Hawaii, Anthony and Makiko, both Mount Vernon Academy graduates, sensed God’s call to move their young family to the country to raise their children.  They left paradise in exchange for 4 years of growing and selling produce from a 10-acre homegrown farm in the rich soil of Centerburg, Ohio.  After 4 years in Arkansas for ministry, the family homesteaded their current 41-acre property in Florala, a small town on the border of Alabama and Florida where there has never been an Adventist presence.  The family built their own little house on a tight budget and planted hundreds of perennial fruits and flowers.  Figs, mandarin oranges, persimmons, and muscadine grapes are some of their favorites.  Oxen, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, bees and dogs all look to the family for care.   The daughters of the family, Sofia 18 and Maria 15 grow natural remedies and offer them to the public at www.DesertRoseSisters.com.  Josef 7 enjoys mowing, making repairs to machines, and leather working.  The family often hosts guests and travels to speak on agriculture, health, family-life, and the everlasting gospel.  Anthony authored the children’s book Getting Started with God in Nature available on DesertRoseSisters.com and Amazon.com  You can keep up with the family at Anthony Czaja’s facebook page, their family ministry website FloralaGardens.org, and their YouTube channel “Florala Gardens.”

Joel & Corina Nephew

Smitten Above the Mitten

Smitten with each other in academy, and having tied the knot back in the dark ages,-- before cell phones and the www--Joel and Corina Nephew feel honored to be invited to share with all of you about their journey as a couple and beyond.

Now-grown children, along with decades in the ministry, have furnished numberless opportunities for reflection, unique insights, and personal and collective growth.

Foolish mistakes and subsequent regrets notwithstanding, they firmly believe that, even in these trying times, the home of two people from completely different backgrounds can truly be a little heaven on earth.

Ben and Brianna Martin

Snapshots of a Healthy Marriage

Ben and Brianna Martin live in Berrien Springs, Michigan, where they love camping, photography, and nature in general.

Ben is the pastor for Children and Family Discipleship at Pioneer Memorial Church. He has served as a youth pastor and elementary school chaplain in Tennessee, California, and Michigan.

Brianna has a background in Adventist education, having served as a teacher and administrator in schools in various states. Currently, she teaches 6th grade in Benton Harbor and runs Disciple Mama, a family discipleship blog.

Ben and Brianna have been married for 11 years, and have two sons: Emmett, a (very) thoughtful 8 year old who loves books, crafts, and telling people about Jesus; and Arlo, a (very) talkative 6 year old who doesn’t appear to pause long enough to take a breath.

The Martins are passionate about leading people of all ages to personal relationships with Jesus and helping them learn how to have healthy relationships with each other--something Ben and Brianna are prayerfully wrestling through, themselves.
